Middle Years Programme at WMS What is MYP? To learn more about the Middle Years Program. Click here "At Wilbur & McMahon, the MYP helps students connect learning to real life while developing the skills and values to make a difference." The IB Middle Years Programme at Wilbur & McMahon School At Wilbur & McMahon School, students in Grades 5–8 engage in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP) —a learning experience that encourages curiosity, reflection, and action. The MYP helps students connect what they learn in the classroom to the world around them through real-world inquiry and exploration of Global Contexts . As students build strong Approaches to Learning (ATL) skills —such as communication, organization, and critical thinking—they grow as independent, compassionate learners who understand their role in a global community. The programme culminates in Grade 8 with the IB Community Project , a student-led opportunity to take meaningful action and make a positive difference both locally and beyond. 5th grade Transition to the IB Middle Years Programme The 2025–2026 school year marks the beginning of Grade 5’s transition into the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). This year will serve as a soft implementation phase , allowing teachers to deepen their understanding of the IB framework while gradually introducing key elements—such as the IB Learner Profile —to students. The process focuses on aligning and embedding MYP practices and assessment approaches with the strong instructional methods and RIDE-aligned curriculum already in place in Grade 5. This thoughtful integration will help ensure a smooth and cohesive learning experience as students move from elementary into the full MYP in Grade 6. This transition reflects our district’s commitment to developing curious, reflective, and globally minded learners who take action to make a positive impact in their communities and beyond. Curriculum 7th grade Deepening Inquiry and Skills In Grade 7, students strengthen and expand the skills introduced in Grade 6. They continue developing ATL skills across disciplines and explore Global Contexts in greater depth. Emphasis is placed on critical and creative thinking, research, and self-management , as students take greater ownership of their learning. Interdisciplinary projects challenge them to apply their understanding to complex, real-world problems and to consider multiple perspectives. Curriculum 6th grade Building the Foundations Grade 6 is students’ first full year as MYP learners. They explore subjects through Global Contexts —real-world themes that connect classroom learning to local and global issues—and begin intentionally developing ATL skills such as communication, organization, collaboration, and reflection. Teachers design inquiry-based learning experiences that help students see connections between subjects and understand how their choices and actions shape the world around them. Curriculum 8th grade Culminating in the Community Project Grade 8 represents the culmination of the MYP at Wilbur & McMahon School. Students apply the skills and global awareness developed throughout the programme in the IB Community Project —a student-led inquiry that identifies a real community need and leads to meaningful action. Through investigation, planning, action, and reflection , students demonstrate independence, responsibility, and compassion. The Community Project showcases their growth as learners and celebrates their ability to make a difference in their community and the world. - Social Emotional/ Educational Equity | Wilbur & McMahon Schools
SOCIAL EMOTIONAL LEARNING RESTORATIVE PRACTICES EDUCATIONAL EQUITY The faculty and staff at Wilbur McMahon School are committed to being your partners in your child's education, and whole-community participation is crucial when it comes to the social, emotional, academic, and intercultural development of all children. It really does take a village to support all children in becoming their best and highest selves. For example, at Wilbur McMahon School (WMS), healthy relationships, celebrating one's uniqueness and that of others, and bullying prevention are a priority year-round with a variety of programs. This starts in the classroom with Open Circle , a Social Emotional Learning/Educational Equity (SELEE) curriculum for grades kindergarten through 5. Open Circle is incorporated into the curriculum during weekly extended homerooms. WMS' specialists, special educators, co-curricular teachers, and Teaching Assistants have also completed training and are paired with homeroom teachers to support and be a part of Open Circle -- making it truly school wide in grades K-5. In grades 6, 7 and 8, WMS has implemented Choose Love , which teaches students to manage their emotions, set goals, show empathy and make responsible decisions. Choose Love is part of the curriculum two times per week and is run by WMS' Counselor/Social Worker. Since the spring of 2020, all middle school teachers and specialists completed and/or began Tier I training in implementing the International Baccalaureate' Middle Years Program (IB MYP), which turns our curriculum upside down -- in a good way. From Ibo.org: "IB MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning. The program empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers." All staff (Certified Staff, Teacher Assistants, Administration) completed a minimum of 10 hours of PD leading to earn a Basic Restorative Tools Certificate , which includes content focused on cultural sensitivity. (https://yrpofri.org/ ). That training continues with all new hires. None of us can do this work alone. Accordingly, the Little Compton School Department is partnering with the local public library on an Intercultural Development Community Book Club for adults. Ta-Nehisi Coates' book Between the World and Me (LCSD purchased multiple loaner copies) is the group's first read. Other intercultural works being considered for future book discussions are Once A Girl, Always a Boy (co-authors led book discussion) , and Being Heumann (author led book discussion) . They are deep reads and spark thoughtful discussions around issues of identity, race, religion, and being differently-abled. The Little Compton School Department is committed to being partners in all facets of a child's education. The critical work around empathy, diversity, and cultural sensitivity is ongoing and integrated across content areas and grades for whole-school progression. The Little Compton School Department is committed to a safe and healthy learning environment and a dynamic, responsive, impactful curriculum.
